What ChatGPT is
ChatGPT is OpenAI's flagship AI product — a conversational assistant you interact with through a chat interface, available on the web and mobile apps. When it launched in November 2022, it was a text-only chat window backed by a powerful language model. Today it is a full platform: it can see images, hear and speak, search the web in real time, run autonomous tasks over hours, generate images, integrate with health apps, and host third-party apps built by developers. It is one of the most widely used software products in the world, with 500 million weekly active users reported in early 2025.
Why it matters
Before ChatGPT, interacting with a large language model required technical know-how. ChatGPT changed that by wrapping the technology in a simple, conversational interface that anyone could use. The result was a step-change in public awareness and adoption of AI — and it set off a wave of competition and investment across the entire industry.
How it works (the basics)
At its core, ChatGPT is powered by a large language model — a type of AI trained on enormous amounts of text that learns to predict and generate human-like responses. You type (or speak) a message; the model reads it, reasons about what a helpful reply looks like, and writes one back. The model can hold a conversation, remember what you said earlier in the chat, and now also pull in live information from the web.
Think of it less like a search engine (which finds pages) and more like a knowledgeable colleague who reads your question, thinks it through, and writes you a considered answer.
From chat box to platform
ChatGPT's evolution has been rapid:
- Multimodal (2023): ChatGPT gained the ability to look at images, listen to voice input, and speak responses aloud — turning it from a text tool into a full assistant.
- Plugins and GPTs (2023): OpenAI introduced plugins for connecting to external services, then custom GPTs — no-code versions of ChatGPT tuned for specific tasks — and a GPT Store to share them.
- Enterprise (2023): ChatGPT Enterprise brought business-grade security and privacy for organizations.
- Web search (2024): ChatGPT Search added real-time web retrieval, letting it answer questions about current events with source links.
- Agents (2025): ChatGPT Agent gave the AI the ability to autonomously complete multi-step tasks — research, bookings, presentations — without constant hand-holding.
- Apps ecosystem (2025): An Apps SDK and in-product directory let developers publish interactive apps that live inside ChatGPT, similar to an app store.
- ChatGPT Work (2026): The newest tier lets ChatGPT run multi-hour autonomous workflows across connected apps and files, targeting professional use cases.
- Voice (2026): GPT-Live-1 powers a new generation of ChatGPT Voice with simultaneous listening and speaking for more natural conversation.
The models underneath
ChatGPT has been powered by a succession of increasingly capable models. The current family is GPT-5.6, which comes in three tiers: Sol (frontier capability), Terra (balanced), and Luna (high-volume efficiency). For everyday use, GPT-5.5 Instant serves as the default — an update that reduced hallucinations and improved personalization. Earlier milestones include GPT-4o (2024), which introduced a unified model for text, audio, and vision, and GPT-5.2 (late 2025), which pushed reasoning and coding to a new level.
Safety and honest mistakes
OpenAI has been public about ChatGPT's imperfections. In 2025, a GPT-4o update made the model excessively agreeable — telling users what they wanted to hear rather than what was accurate, a problem called sycophancy. OpenAI rolled back the update and published a detailed explanation of what went wrong. The company has also published reports on state-linked actors attempting to misuse ChatGPT for influence operations, and on PRC-linked campaigns spreading false claims about the product.
Business and reach
ChatGPT is the commercial engine behind OpenAI. The company raised $40 billion at a $300 billion valuation in March 2025, and a further $122 billion in early 2026 — capital earmarked for compute infrastructure and frontier model development. ChatGPT is embedded in Apple's software ecosystem through a partnership announced in 2024, deployed on the U.S. Department of Defense's GenAI.mil platform, and backed by a 750MW compute partnership with Cerebras for faster responses.
To support free-tier access, OpenAI began testing clearly labeled ads in ChatGPT in 2026 — a significant shift in how the product is monetized, with paid plans remaining ad-free.
Where it's heading
The trajectory is clear: ChatGPT is moving from assistant to autonomous agent. ChatGPT Work, the Plugin Directory replacing the App Directory, workspace agents powered by Codex, and the Agentic Commerce Protocol (which lets ChatGPT complete purchases on your behalf) all point toward a product that doesn't just answer questions — it takes action in the world on your behalf. The model family will keep advancing, and the platform layer around it is growing to match.
